TMJ (Jaw) Pain

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain affects the jaw joint and surrounding muscles, often causing pain while chewing, talking, or opening the mouth. Physiotherapy helps relax jaw muscles and restore comfortable jaw movement.

Common Symptoms

Do's

  • Eat soft foods while the jaw is painful
  • Practice gentle jaw stretches as advised
  • Apply warmth to relax tight jaw muscles
  • Maintain relaxed jaw posture during the day

Don'ts

  • Don't chew gum or hard foods frequently
  • Don't clench or grind your teeth
  • Don't open your mouth too wide when yawning
  • Don't ignore ongoing jaw clicking or locking

When to see a physiotherapist: See a doctor or dentist if the jaw locks, pain is severe, or it does not improve with self-care, and consult a physiotherapist for jaw exercises.
