IT Band Syndrome

Iliotibial (IT) band syndrome causes pain on the outer side of the knee from friction of the IT band, common in runners and cyclists. Physiotherapy helps release tightness and correct movement patterns that cause the irritation.

Common Symptoms

Do's

  • Stretch and foam roll the outer thigh regularly
  • Strengthen hip and glute muscles as guided
  • Reduce running distance until pain settles
  • Wear proper footwear suited to your gait

Don'ts

  • Don't continue running through sharp knee pain
  • Don't run on cambered or uneven surfaces
  • Don't skip hip-strengthening exercises
  • Don't increase training load too quickly

When to see a physiotherapist: Consult a doctor if knee pain persists despite rest, and see a physiotherapist for gait analysis and a targeted strengthening plan.
