Flat Feet in Children

Flat feet are common in young children as the foot's arch develops, and most outgrow it naturally by age five or six. Physiotherapy helps in cases where flat feet cause pain, stiffness, or affect walking and running.

Common Symptoms

Do's

  • Encourage barefoot walking on safe, varied surfaces at home
  • Choose supportive, well-fitted footwear for daily wear
  • Do simple foot and toe strengthening exercises as advised
  • Monitor your child's walking pattern and shoe wear over time

Don'ts

  • Don't panic over flat feet found in toddlers without pain
  • Don't rely on rigid arch supports without professional advice
  • Don't ignore ongoing pain, limping, or reluctance to walk
  • Don't compare your child's foot development to siblings or peers

When to see a physiotherapist: See a doctor or physiotherapist if flat feet come with pain, stiffness, frequent tripping, or if the arch hasn't developed by age seven.
