In-Toeing and Out-Toeing Gait (Pigeon Toe)

In-toeing (pigeon toe) and out-toeing describe a child's feet pointing inward or outward while walking, and both are usually a normal part of growth. Physiotherapy helps when the gait causes tripping, discomfort, or doesn't improve with age.

Common Symptoms

Do's

  • Encourage regular running, climbing, and active play
  • Track how the walking pattern changes over several months
  • Follow any prescribed stretching or strengthening exercises
  • Choose comfortable shoes without built-in corrective wedges unless advised

Don'ts

  • Don't use corrective shoes or braces without professional guidance
  • Don't force your child to sit or walk in a "corrected" position
  • Don't worry excessively if it's mild and your child isn't in pain
  • Don't ignore the pattern if it worsens or persists beyond age eight

When to see a physiotherapist: Consult a physiotherapist if the in-toeing or out-toeing causes frequent falls, pain, or hasn't improved by age seven to eight.
