Vestibular Exercises for Elderly Dizziness

Dizziness and imbalance in older adults are often linked to inner ear or vestibular system changes. Physiotherapy uses specific head and eye movement exercises to retrain balance and reduce dizziness episodes.

Common Symptoms

Do's

  • Do perform prescribed vestibular exercises consistently
  • Do move slowly when changing position, such as sitting to standing
  • Do practice balance exercises in a safe, supported space
  • Do report specific triggers of dizziness to your physiotherapist

Don'ts

  • Don't make sudden head movements or quick turns
  • Don't ignore recurring dizziness as something to just "wait out"
  • Don't drive or climb stairs alone during active dizzy spells
  • Don't stop exercises early even if mild dizziness occurs during therapy

When to see a physiotherapist: See a doctor promptly if dizziness is severe, sudden, or accompanied by chest pain, vision changes, or slurred speech.
