Chest Physiotherapy for Elderly

Reduced lung function, prolonged bed rest, or respiratory illness can make breathing harder for elderly patients and lead to chest infections. Chest physiotherapy uses breathing exercises and airway clearance techniques to improve lung capacity and prevent complications.

Common Symptoms

Do's

  • Do practice deep breathing and coughing exercises daily
  • Do sit upright or in a supported position to ease breathing
  • Do stay as mobile as your condition safely allows
  • Do use prescribed breathing devices or techniques consistently

Don'ts

  • Don't remain lying flat for long periods if breathless
  • Don't skip breathing exercises even on days you feel better
  • Don't ignore increasing breathlessness or bluish lips and nails
  • Don't smoke or stay in smoke-filled environments

When to see a physiotherapist: Seek urgent medical care for sudden severe breathlessness, chest pain, high fever with cough, or bluish discoloration of lips or fingertips.
