Spinal Stenosis in Elderly

Spinal stenosis is a narrowing of the spinal canal that puts pressure on nerves, common in older adults and causing pain or numbness in the back and legs. Physiotherapy relieves pressure through posture correction and targeted exercises that improve mobility.

Common Symptoms

Do's

  • Do practice flexion-based exercises that ease nerve pressure
  • Do take rest breaks while walking to reduce leg discomfort
  • Do maintain good posture while sitting and standing
  • Do follow a physiotherapist-designed strengthening program

Don'ts

  • Don't stand or walk for extended periods without breaks
  • Don't arch the lower back excessively during exercise or daily tasks
  • Don't ignore worsening numbness or weakness in the legs
  • Don't lift heavy objects without proper posture guidance

When to see a physiotherapist: Seek medical attention if there is loss of bladder or bowel control, worsening leg weakness, or numbness that spreads or intensifies.
