Growing Pains in Children

Growing pains are a common ache felt in the legs of active children, usually in the evening or at night, and are not linked to actual bone growth. Physiotherapy can ease discomfort and rule out other causes when pain is frequent or intense.

Common Symptoms

Do's

  • Gently massage the legs to ease discomfort
  • Apply a warm compress before bedtime if pain occurs often
  • Encourage regular stretching, especially after active days
  • Keep a simple log of when and where the pain occurs

Don'ts

  • Don't ignore pain that is one-sided or affects a single joint
  • Don't dismiss pain accompanied by limping or swelling
  • Don't over-restrict normal play out of unnecessary worry
  • Don't assume every leg pain is simply "growing pains"

When to see a physiotherapist: See a doctor if the pain is one-sided, involves a joint, causes limping, or is accompanied by fever, swelling, or fatigue.
