Foot Drop Management

Foot drop is difficulty lifting the front part of the foot, often caused by nerve or muscle problems, which can lead to tripping and an unsteady walk. Physiotherapy helps strengthen weak muscles, improve gait, and reduce fall risk.

Common Symptoms

Do's

  • Wear a foot brace or splint if recommended
  • Practice prescribed strengthening exercises for the ankle and foot
  • Lift your knee higher when walking to avoid tripping
  • Keep walkways clear and well-lit at home

Don'ts

  • Don't walk barefoot on uneven surfaces
  • Don't ignore persistent numbness or worsening weakness
  • Don't skip using assistive devices if advised
  • Don't delay starting physiotherapy once diagnosed

When to see a physiotherapist: See a doctor if foot weakness appears suddenly or worsens, and consult a physiotherapist to identify the cause and begin a targeted strengthening program.
