Mobility Aid Training (Walker and Cane)

Using a walker or cane correctly can prevent falls and restore confidence in walking after illness, surgery, or age-related weakness. Physiotherapy teaches seniors how to choose the right aid and use it safely for everyday movement.

Common Symptoms

Do's

  • Do get the walker or cane height properly fitted by a professional
  • Do practice walking with the aid on different surfaces under guidance
  • Do check rubber tips and wheels regularly for wear
  • Do keep pathways at home clear and well-lit

Don'ts

  • Don't use a walking aid that hasn't been sized for your height
  • Don't rush or take large steps while using the aid
  • Don't use a cane or walker on wet or cluttered floors without care
  • Don't switch to a cane too early if a walker is still needed for safety

When to see a physiotherapist: See a physiotherapist if walking feels unsteady even with an aid, or if you have fallen while using a cane or walker.
