Shin Splints

Shin splints cause pain along the shinbone from repetitive stress, often seen in runners or those who suddenly increase activity. Physiotherapy helps reduce inflammation and correct movement patterns that overload the shin.

Common Symptoms

Do's

  • Rest from high-impact activity until pain settles
  • Apply ice to the shin after activity
  • Wear supportive, well-cushioned footwear
  • Strengthen calf and foot muscles gradually

Don'ts

  • Don't increase running distance or intensity suddenly
  • Don't run on hard surfaces while symptomatic
  • Don't ignore pain that persists during activity
  • Don't skip proper warm-up and cool-down

When to see a physiotherapist: See a doctor if shin pain is severe, localized to one spot, or does not improve with rest, as this may need imaging to rule out a stress fracture.
