Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome (Runner's Knee)

Patellofemoral pain syndrome causes pain around or behind the kneecap, often from overuse, muscle imbalance, or poor movement patterns. Physiotherapy helps correct alignment and strengthen the muscles that support the knee.

Common Symptoms

Do's

  • Strengthen the thigh and hip muscles as guided
  • Modify activities that worsen kneecap pain
  • Wear supportive footwear during exercise
  • Warm up before running or sports

Don'ts

  • Don't continue running through sharp knee pain
  • Don't sit with knees bent for long periods
  • Don't ignore weakness in the hips or thighs
  • Don't skip physiotherapy-guided strengthening

When to see a physiotherapist: Consult a doctor if knee pain persists despite rest or if swelling develops, and see a physiotherapist for a personalized strengthening plan.
