Age-Related Muscle Loss (Sarcopenia)

As we age, muscles naturally lose strength and mass, a process called sarcopenia. This can make everyday tasks like standing up, climbing stairs, or carrying groceries harder. Physiotherapy uses targeted strength exercises to slow this decline and keep seniors independent.

Common Symptoms

Do's

  • Do simple resistance exercises with light weights or bands regularly
  • Do eat enough protein at each meal to support muscle repair
  • Do stay active with daily walks or gentle activity
  • Do get strength assessed periodically by a physiotherapist

Don'ts

  • Don't stay sedentary for long stretches of the day
  • Don't skip meals or restrict protein intake
  • Don't attempt heavy lifting without proper guidance
  • Don't ignore gradual weakness as "just old age"

When to see a physiotherapist: See a doctor or physiotherapist if you notice rapid muscle loss, frequent falls, or growing difficulty with daily tasks like walking or climbing stairs.
